Jim Kerby won the Seventh Annual Cle Elum Ridge 50 Km in a time of 4:47:32.
Krissy Moehl set a new course record as she bettered the women's field with
her time of 5:10:36.  Krissy, new to the Northwest Ultrarunning scene,
finished strong for her first ultra win.  This was not a complete surprise
considering she recently paced Bill Emerson's win at the Cascade Crest
Classic and Dave Terry's 10th place finish at Wasatch.  In contrast to
Krissy's commanding lead, Jim worked his way up from behind the men's lead
pack, slowly picking them off one by one at the 20 mile mark.  Jim knew that
he was closing on another runner when he saw the dust hanging over the trail
from the recent footsteps.  First year winner, Rob Lang chased Jim into the
finish after taking a bad fall.

The runners were greeted with the best ever weather for the Cle Elum run.
The clear blue skies and temperatures in the sixties provided excellent
running conditions.  The dry summer had shut down a local logging operation,
which resulted in some tricky debris detours around mile 22.  Then, there
was the dust.  The dust on portions of the trail often seemed like 6" of
talcum powder.  Dusty conditions along the eastern slopes of the Cascades
are not unusual but this year was more than normal.

Irregardless, the views from the course were magnificent.  A ridge line
beyond Windy Pass mostly obscures Mt. Rainier but it still poked its
prominent white peak into view.  Windy Pass is the high point of the course
at 5,700 feet and has now not lived up to its name for the past two years.
At 17.3 miles, it is always a relief to know the climb is over and it is
"downhill" from there.  One large descent before the trail follows the
Taneum Creek to the finish.  About half of the numerous creek crossings are
bridged, though it was reported that many found dry routes around the "wet"
crossings.

Eight more runners were inducted into the Five Year club and received their
Cle Elum Buckles.  Many of the first Five Year recipients are now at seven
finishes and counting down three more years to receive their 10 year Cle
Elum Jackets.

The Cle Elum 50 Km continues to be the most popular fall ultra run in the
Northwest.  Frank Fleetham, Lary Webster, Marcia Korum and their volunteers
run a very well organized event.  Janine Duplessis and Ray Nicholl (record
sweep holder) ran the whole course sweeping and eating everyone else's dust.
Next year Frank has promised no dust.
